Smithtown Christian School dimisses early because of power outage

Strong storms brought record breaking rainfall and strong winds for the Friday morning commute.
The National Weather Service weather obersvation station at Long Island Islip MacArthur Airport, the official observation station for the greater-Smithtown area, recorded a peak wind gust of 55 m.p.h. and a record breaking calendar day rainfall of 0.64 inches. A record breaking daytime high of 58 degrees was also recorded.
By 11 a.m., about 700 LIPA customers were without power across the Smithtown township. The Smithtown Christian School, located on Brooksite Drive, dismissed students early because of the power outage.
A cold front which pushed through the region with the storms is bringing cooler temperatures for the weekend. Saturday’s forecasted high is 40 before dropping down to 26 in the evenings.
In the week ahead, precipitation is forecasted again during the overnight hours between Christmas Eve and Christmas – as well as during the midday. Although forecasting models have been back and forth about the form of precipitation, they currently indicate a chance of snow for the Christmas system and more in the way of rain and frozen mix for the midday system. Little accumulation is expected with the Christmas system.

Smithtown, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) – The National Weather Service is recommending the community ties down or brings in loose holiday decorations before bed Thursday as overnight storms could bring wind gusts up to 60 mph.
At 9 p.m. Thursday, meteorologists in the weather service’s Upton office, which covers the New York City tri-state area, issued a High Wind Warning for parts of the region including the greater-Smithtown area. The warning, which takes effect at 4 a.m. Friday, was issued ahead of forecasted sustained winds of between 30 and 40 m.p.h. and wind gusts up to 60 m.p.h. Minor coastal flooding is also possible along the shoreline and in low lying areas.

The storms and associated winds are a result of a low pressure system developing off the mid-atlantic coast and pushing into northern New England Friday.

Isolated overnight thunderstorms could result in gusting winds, downed branches and isolated power outages. The storms are expected to continue through the Friday morning commute.
